I recently traveled to Italy with my UK Sky mobile. The phone changed networks as you'd expect but I could not make phone calls. I had to reboot the phone and all was well. On returning to the UK I had to reboot the phone again to make calls. Is this normal?

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreIt might be that when you arrived abroad the setting on it didn't change to abroad until the reboot and then it didn't change back to Home until you did this again so I take it that this is working now ?

Yes working now, but I don't expect to turn a mobile off and on when I move country. And nothing to say I needed to do this. Is this normal?

Apple:
Settings > Mobile Data > SIM Applications > Abroad
Android:
Sky Menu App or SIM toolkit > Roaming > Abroad

Is this a new thing. I don't ever recall having to do that.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreMost devices make the change automatically so you would know anything about it but occasionally it has to be done manually as what have been your issue. It isn't a major issue so nothing to be concerned about.

I remember in the early days of mobiles I used to turn it off to fly and then turn it on when I arrived in a new country. I thought that with an iPhone it would all seamlessly switch automatically across networks. Seems not. Thanks for your help.

The issue was to all intents and purposes it looked like my mobile was connected to the local Italian network, when it wasn't. That explains why calls to to local businesses failed. I thought they were ignoring me. How was I to know my phone needed to be be restarted? It appeared connected.
