If you are close to land you may pick up a local network which could trigger the £2 daily charge that Sky charge for roaming in Europe. If you don't want to incur any charges for this then turn roaming and mobile data off before leaving the uk. Put your phone in flight mode then when WiFi is available just turn WiFi on (still in flight mode).

There are two ways to send messages and make calls.
If you use a 'normal' cellular service then you are liable for the appropriate roaming costs from the cellular provider. Alternatively, if you can make calls or send messages over data (such as WhatsApp*) then you are subject to any WiFi costs (which on a ship are not usually 'cheap').
* requires the recipient to have same app too
