Going on a cruise

I am going on a 12 day cruise to Europe will I get charged if I make calls or texts messages while away even if have wifi on the ship

Hi @Sasa77  be wary of costs of on board WiFi/calls etc as they can be very expensive. If you are close to land you may pick up a local network which could trigger the £2 daily charge that Sky charge for roaming in Europe. If you don't want to incur any charges for this then turn roaming and mobile data off before leaving the uk. Put your phone in flight mode then when WiFi is available just turn WiFi on (still in flight mode).

There are two ways to send messages and make calls.

 

If you use a 'normal' cellular service then you are liable for the appropriate roaming costs from the cellular provider.  Alternatively, if you can make calls or send messages over data (such as WhatsApp*) then you are subject to any WiFi costs (which on a ship are not usually 'cheap').

 

* requires the recipient to have same app too
