Data roaming charge

You have tried to charge me £45 for data usage in the Dominican Republic when I never used any data - I tried to when I first arrived but it didn't work at all and use WiFi the whole week I was there as my data did not work. I will not be paying this charge as no data was used!!!

Hi @LeleShur  as you have stated you tried then you will be responsible for the charge. Dominican Republic is a rest of the world destination and is charged at thousands of pounds per gig of data. The £45 is the roaming cap on your account. When you landed your phone automatically connects to the local network unless you turn off roaming, mobile data and activate flight mode before leaving the UK. With the charges for that destination your phone will have reached the cap in seconds and stopped working at the £45 cap, that's why you couldn't get it to work. Luckily you kept the cap in place or you could have been facing a bill very much larger.

@LeleShur

Just to add, you can't withhold payment. It would result in a complete restriction of mobile services until you paid it.

At £2.16 per megabyte your phone would have hit the £45 limit extremely rapidly: it's a fraction over 20MB at 'rest of the world' rates (or about half an offline Google Maps segment in a 4G download lasting 20 seconds)

It's difficult to comprehend just how expensive most UK SIM usage is when outside the countries where daily roaming applies: if it wasn't for that default spending cap you would have owed Sky many times the cost of the plane ticket in an hour, and a 'whole week' of cellular data use would  buy a very nice apartment in Santa Domingo.

For reference, with a Sky SIM the £2 per day roaming only applies to the EU/EEA plus the countries listed in bold below.
