Changing a sim only to a device plan

Hi I was wondering if anybody can help my husband currently has a sim only on my account but he's wanting a new device so do I just order the new device and when it arrives use his sim with it to retain his number or do I have to change his sim only plan to a device plan and order a new device against his number? Hope this makes sense!

@missuswardle  Simply order the device, no new sim or plan is required.
