UK law requires communications service providers ('CSPs') to retain details of the message 'envelope' (date/time/sender/recipient/location/duration) for 12 months but not the content, which they shouldn't even be aware of.
Communications data is defined in section 21(4) of RIPA. It can be used to demonstrate who was communicating; when; from where; how; and with whom. It does not include the content of any communication: for example the text of an email or a conversation on a telephone. It includes the manner in which, and by what method, a person or machine communicates with another person or machine. It can include the time and duration of a communication, the telephone number or email address of the originator and recipient, and sometimes the location of the device from which the communication was made. Communications data is generated, held or obtained in the provision, delivery and maintenance of communications services.
