I use Sky Go on my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I get a good signal when accessing Sky News.
Every other channel selected results in an on- screen message:

Sorry, something went wrong.
An error occurred. Check your internet connection.
Error Code 4 2 5 3 0 2 4 4 2 1
-------
I have a good internet connection otherwise I would not be receiving Sky News.
Any advice to resolve this error?

I found out that SkyGo won't work through a VPN
Seems odd despite paying the full subscription for Sky, one is denied using the app abroad?

Not really - Sky only have the rights to permit the content to be viewed in the UK (and ROI), so have to take reasonable measures to prevent use of a VPN.
