Black screen, no sound

the remote will switch everything on and off but nothing else

Try remote reset

hold down 7 and 9 for 3 seconds then 1 and 3 for 3 seconds your remote should reset. 

It's also worth unplugging the TV for 2 minutes and reboot it. Actually do that first.
