Lines & blotches on Sky Home Screen/EPG

Replacement Sky Glass and it's exactly the same! The main home screen always used to be pin sharp. Now the blue screen has lines and patchy squares that show up in the background. This was what originally drew my attention to look out for other picture imperfections. Watching anything with low lit scenes and the black areas pixelate. Perhaps that was always the case and I never noticed. Sometimes there can be a black kettle in a kitchen on a drama or someone wearing a black t shirt in a studio audience and there's clear moving ghosty, blotchy squares instead of, well... black! Such a dissapointment. This is a £900+ tv I'm paying for. Ive always had confidence in Sky's products. They used to only make the best technology in the business. Where did it all go wrong?

Hi @SquareEyes86

Unfortunately it's a product over two years old and it's using a mid range panel. The reviews since day one highlighted this fact. Also things move quicky in the TV space in this time.  I am relatively happy with my glass, and software updates have improved things somewhat but do notice this one some content every now and then. I do think viewing angles, light legs etc also play a huge part of the experience.

Although Glass is still rolling out in many markets over the world, Comcast still seems to think it's a viable product and no V2 seems to be on the horizon.

As I've posted many times, v1 Glass was released in October 2021, which means it was designed, specified, manufactured and tested under Comcast ownership of Sky during the depths of the pandemic and its accompanying global electronic component shortages: not ideal circumstances for what's essentially a debut product entirely unrelated to any previous Sky satellite hardware and heritage.

As frequently observed in this forum, Glass is the only television set sold at a higher price now than thirty months ago and where there's been no successor models.

I'd suggest potential purchasers need to make their own judgement about the relative value of that vs using a Stream puck with, for example, a hugely reduced 2022 or 2023 OLED.

Re: Lines & blotches on Sky Home Screen/EPG

Sky Glass was created for convenience, not necessarily quality.
The convenience of...

1. Buying a 4K TV interest free on a 48 month loan agreement

2. Getting a Sky TV service without a dish or excessive cabling

3. Having a built-in soundbar, offering sound quality better than most average smart TVs

4. Having a range of apps built in which Sky have control over, meaning less faff for the customer

All these things are appealing to many mass market customers. It's a mass market product, designed for the masses, not a top of the range audio visual product with high spec components for A/V enthusiasts.

Can anyone else check the blue Home Screen and confirm if these blotches and lines are in the background for you too? As mentioned, this didn't used to be the case until the last few weeks and been on both TV's. Leads me to believe a software update has caused this.

Yes there are lines when scrolling down but clear after the image in top right is displayed, but that is a different issue than the issue with black colours during a broadcast or uneven backlight etc which is due to the FALD panels used in the TV.

What is it with the flashing green squares as well that show up on black boarders of some films and end credits too? I've come to the assumtion these things are normal on Sky Glass?

I've had a few glass sets and never had any flashing green squares ..... sounds more like a defective glass unit

Re: Lines & blotches on Sky Home Screen/EPG

It's like a matrix effect on certain scenes that are mainly dark and appear/spill over onto the black boarders of the film bars. Usually on Sky live HD channels.

@SquareEyes86

Our Glass has diagonal blotchy blue lines on the Home Screen, but everything is ok when watching tv. I assumed it was intentional.
