65” sky glass picture

We have had sky glass in the last fortnight. I am pretty underwhelmed with the picture quality. For example, if we watch something with a dark background, the background is not a solid colour, it seems swirls of different shades.

is there something wrong with our settings? Or is it the picture just this bad?

The current model is over three years old and wasn't an outstanding panel, backlight and processor combination on release: as I've mentioned elsewhere, manufacturing took place during the global silicon component shortage caused by the pandemic and we suspect too much was spent on the bespoke aluminium enclosure.

I use these settings, given in a previous post.

These help significantly, particularly for high bitrate on-demand content and streaming apps.  Some live channels still really struggle, particularly with murky source material, and realistically Glass v1 is 2020-21 mid-range QLED at best, now superceded by both lower cost OLED and mini-LED.

It's worth noting that a new second generation of Sky Glass TV is due to be revealed in a few weeks time in February. Nobody knows the exact specifics of how it will differ but, as @TimmyBGood mentions, the current QLED backlit model is over three years old and technology advances quickly. 

If you are really not happy with your current Glass TV then you have 31 days from delivery to return it, then maybe wait to see whether the newer model will have improved OLED or mini-LED specificiations at perhaps a lower price point.

It is frankly extraordinary that the 65" Glass v1 still retails for £1200, when that was an ambitious price in the autumn of 2021.

I quite agree. It's a shocking amount of money for such dated technology.

Oops, my mistake: it's actually £150 more expensive now than it was then (presumably reflecting the significantly increased cost of offering credit terms these days)

In July 2024, I  purchased a 2023  65" Samsung OLED with free soundbar for £988 direct from Samsung.

I am happy with my purchase as the picture is fantastic. 

If your heart is set on a Sky Glass, then maybe look at eBay for a second hand one- there are plenty for sale circa £350+, or wait for the Sky Glass 2.

I don't have Sky Glass, but have 8 year old 4K Toshiba LED in my home office. The description of the OPs Glass picture sounds identical to my Toshiba, which I don't mind for this room, and I only paid £100 for it second hand.
