Use the self-checkouts then. We do it with a store handset, much faster than messing around with loading a week's shop onto a conveyor and then all back into the bags again, and the self-checkouts work just as well with the store scanner as the "smartscan" section does. The only reason we used to use the smartscan terminals was because they were usually less busy than the selfscan ones, but now it's about the same. Another advantage of self-scanning is you can easily check a price when the shelf label is missing, also if an item is discounted they often don't stick the discount barcode completely over the original (I'm sure that's 100% deliberate) and the scanners (including the staffed ones) always prioritise the original code over the reduction code if it can see a complete strip of the original!
