Apple mail not connecting

A couple of days ago, my Mac running El Capitan stopped syncing mail with Sky/Yahoo. I receive the following error message...

"There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Yahoo!” or try again.

The server returned the error: Connections to the server “imap.tools.sky.com” on the default ports timed out."

I have tried removing the account via system preferences and reinstalling. I had read that using the 16 digit generated password might help, but when I try to reinstall the account, this new password does not work. My existing one is recognised, but I still get the same message.

I can still access my mail on my Android phone & through the web browser on my mac, but not using the native Apple mail app.

I've seen lots of similar queries on the forums here in the past few days. Has anyone come up with a solution - or any comment from Sky?

Can you expand on that? I would expect the only validation to take place after you've connected to the mail server, and clearly you're not getting that far.

Re: Apple mail not connecting

When I try to reinstall the email account I am prompted to enter my Sky id and password. If I use my existing (user created password) it appears to work and the account appears in my mailboxes sidebar. But after a few minutes of trying to connect, the timeout message reappears.

After uninstalling again, I tried to add the account again but this time using a 16 digit generated password from Sky. But this is not recognised.

I'm guessing this is a Apple-specific problem, as I've seen a number of Mac/iPhone users have the same problem, but other platforms don't seem to be affected

Try entering your full Sky email address as the ID/Username to see if that fixes it. You will need to enter the @sky.com part.

Re: Apple mail not connecting

This seems to be an ongoing issue Sky are ignoring 😞

I have contacted them may times now regarding Sky Yahoo email being offline on my Macbok using Mail application

Using the Apple connection Doctor, the SMTP server is connecting - but not the IMAP server

It keeps asking me to verify my usr name and Password

Sky email has defiately gone downhill since them moved away from Google mail to Yahoo 😞

@kmdcorp if you're using the Apple Mail app, that appears to be the problem. Loads of posts about it. Sky Yahoo Mail via other apps and other operating systems is working fine. Report it to Apple.

From other posts, it seems to be intermittent: sometimes works ok, others not.

That was in 2013, have you only just noticed.

Did you possibly update your Macbook recently?

No was working fine for the last 15 years on my Mac until the other day - but around the same time I updated to 12.6.2

I suspect that is what did it. Most of the people with iPhone problems said they had just updated the iOS.
