Sky/Yahoo are advocating a 2 step verification to access Yahoo Mail. To set it up entering a mobile number is required. What about those of us who do not possess and have no desire to possess a mobile phone? Don't we get the same protection?

By all means raise it with Sky.
On the bright side you're no worse off than you were than before 2FA was available. Presumably you would have switched provider by now if the absence of 2FA up to this point had been a major concern.
