second router set up

Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice/help, I have a Sky Q router in the house with a PC hard wired to it, I've recently got an office in the garden which has an RJ45 cable running from the router in the house to the office so I can connect my laptop to the house router, all that works fine.

Problem is I have no Wifi in my office, a booster is out of the question as I already have one elswhere in the house so I had a look into installing a second router  in my office so I could still connect my laptop directly to an RJ45 (I'm on a VPN so wifi speeds are pretty bad) and my phones could connect to that wifi rather than trying to connect to the house wifi.

It seems like this is feasable, as I found this link which is pretty clear How to Connect One Router to Another to Expand a Network (wikihow.com) but has anyone else done this successfully with a Sky Q router???

@ginger205  What you really need is a dedicated access point (AP) for extending your wifi,

cheap enough to purchase or a pay a little more if you need any advanced features.

Combine an AP with a network switch, that will give you extra ethernet ports as well as decent wifi,

While utilising an old router to extend wifi is doable, sometimes it causes more trouble than it's worth!

@ginger205  If you've already run an etrhernet cable already then all you need to a unmanaged network switch, using  2 routers is the most archaic & problem filled way to get broadband to your office, a network switch is the easiest solution.

Re: second router set up

Problem is a network switch doesnt have wifi, or are your suggesting I connect both routers to a network switch and then the network switch to the WAN?

No, forget using the 2 routers as advised it will cause more issues that it resolves, you can add a network switch in the office using the existing ethert cable and then connect you laptop using ethernet or if absolutely essential via a seperate Access Point (wifi device) as per @TomThumb5ive post.

Re: second router set up

That makes perfect sense, I was looking at a wireless access point but couldn't find one that had an RJ45 on the back so I could connect the laptop, didn't even think of sticking a switch in there! 🙄

Re: second router set up

@ginger205  Just a thought in case it's relevant !!!

You didn't mention the make or model of the extra router that you were intending to use in your garden office ?

While some 3rd party router's might have an AP mode built in 👍 you would be good to go😁

if it is an old or spare sky router you were intending to use 🙈  you most probably will experience network errors of some sort & a high chance of your work vpn having issues.

Re: second router set up

I havent got one yet, but looking at the link I posted I had concerns that Sky's admin wouldn't allow the sort of configuration I'd need, so an AP and a switch is the way forward, especially as I work in the electronics industry and one of our customers manufactures unmanaged switches, hopefully I can pull in a favour!
