A 'self assigned IP address' is generated when the computing device gets no response from a broadcast request to a DHCP server.  For a wired network connection, possible points of failure are the device itself, its ethernet port, the ethernet cable, the ethernet port on the router or the router itself.

@Will+Lee

The most likely cause is that the ethernet cable you are using isnt of Cat5e specification which means the Sky hub will reject it because the Sky hub is very picky on what it likes to connect to. Often cheap ethernet cables that come packaged with other items dont work because they are not completely wired up to specification.

You need a cable that is Cat5e with all 4 pairs wired up.
