Wifi Max, do I get a new router?

Hi, I'm new to sky, been with the V media, until they sky (no pun intended) rocketed my account. So now I'm here, hello! I have the max package and max hub, but WiFi I **bleep**, even tried adding my tplink mesh to it, 3 pods, and it's still **bleep**. So I've added Wifi Max to my account 5 days ago and it's says its done, so I am getting a range of 120mb to 250mb download and 50mb to 220mb upload, is that a out right? I was expecting near 500mb. Also should I get a hub upgrade too? And should me account now have extra app access somewhere to start setting and checking the security levels and access etc? Again, I'm me to sky, so be gentle 😂👍🏻

The Max hub is the one that's sent out with new FTTP broadband, the only better spec hub is the one sent out to the 2.5 & 5Gbps customers on the Cityfibre network (no, you can't have one 😉 ).

If you have a working TP-Link mesh system setup then I'm not sure if you needed the Sky Max WiFi add-on, is there a cooling of period for that? have you tried disabling the Max wifi and using the mesh system in its AP mode?

If you do stick with it then you need to use the MySky app on your phone and use the service checker. Follow through all of the prompts  and check the wifi coverage. If it deems it necessary you can request the first of three pods to extend the wifi (I'm ignoring the current mesh system here). If you're still found wanting then you need to call them for an engineer visit who will check what is best for your particular environment.

The speeds you're quoting will be wifi speeds presumably and no company guarantees them. You're on the 500Mbps service the same as myself I presume?

BTW, that upload speed can't be right on an asymmetric broadband connection, mine on a wired connection shows 530Mbps DL & 70Mbps UL speeds.

Re: Wifi Max, do I get a new router?

Hi, first thanks for the reply 🙏🏻

I tried to get the mesh to work at first and it was really bad, 20mb download 1mb upload 😲 On virgin it was around 200mb down and 120mb up. So I was seriously questioning if this is good enough.

So I tried to get the mesh working but it was poor. After upgrading to max WiFi it has increased with the readings in my post, but I am confused, if I'd the upgrade and now it better, internal WiFi, then what did they do as no one has been and I don't have any new kit?

So where they throttling the WiFi at the hub, of so, then that's a bit of a rip off. I was expecting a new update router for the extra money. If it isn't them I need to know what they did to boost WiFi. If you get what I mean.

I am happy with my mesh (ap mode) any it it sits as it is now and I don't have a new router that does rhw max WiFi, then I will ask for it to be taken off and see what happens with the WiFi as it is.

The system show all good in my sky thing, but internal WiFi is not what I expected.

I have up to 900mb coming in but I think internally its not what It should be?

Cheers 👍🏻

@Area52

If you already have a white Max Hub then adding the WiFi Max subscription supplement doesn't do anything for either WiFi speed or coverage by itself.

It does however bring the option to claim booster pods under the terms of the 'Enhanced Wall to Wall WiFi Guarantee'

Without pods, WiFi Max enables the Parental Control options.

There's a few typos in there so perhaps I'm misreading but if you're on the 900Mbps service and have subscribed to Sky Max Wifi as well then you should have the Sky Max Hub (SR213 model number)?

Presuming you are getting 900Mbps to the router (and any ethernet connected devices) then the wifi speed depends on signal strength and the device receiving it, this will vary immensely but you'll never get the 900Mbps (or anything close) via wifi. That's just the nature of the beast. Nobody is throttling the wifi.

BTW, the MySky app is where you generally access the Max router settings.
