Does skyQ router support Wi-Fi 6E
06 Jan 2023 07:53 AM
The chances of Sky upgrading their next router to the wireless 6E are slim to say the least, even now their current routers don't even use the full capabilities of the 5Ghz band, eg: no channels above 36 and only 80Mhz width channel.
Wifi 6E is indeed the way of the future with an additional 6Ghz band and better speed, congestion control, lower latency and jitter.
It is more likely that Sky's next router will only be wifi 6.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreThe Q Hub design dates from 2015 so couldn't possibly be WiFi 6.
The Broadband Hub is more recent (released September 2019) but still pre-dates ratification of the 802.11ax standard by the IEEE

The only certainty at this stage with the next manifestation of sky's router whenever that will land,
will be the
>inflated extra financial outlay for the privilege in obtaining one!
>Sky milking the extra revenue for as long as they can!
& going by past history,
>Poor coding & truly questionable firmware updates,
If only Sky could prove me wrong...
(although I do believe the gui will actually be compatible with iOS devices once more)

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Drew2705 I wouldn't be as cynical as @TomThumb5ive but as and when Sky introduce a new hub they wont just replace the roughly 5 million old hubs for several reasons.
Firstly Sky will almost certainly offer the new unit at a premium as they did when they launched the Sky Broadband Hub. To replace the existing hubs free would cost them hundreds of millions of pounds which would be recovered through higher customer charges.
Secondly arguably only customers buying the Gigafast tier will be able to use the additional speed offered as the existing wifi5 equipped units can deliver 700Mb/s in the same room. Wifi 6 and 6e.do offer higher speeds and possibly more usable range but the limitation is more likely the connection you buy - my SR203 delivers over 600 Mb/s one room away which is more than saturates my Ultrafast+ connection which tests at 540Mb/s over ethernet. Sky currently are not accepting new orders for Gigafast connections.
Lastly, there are virtually no apps apart from speed tests that can use those speeds let alone need them. Downloads of files are faster only if the server will allow very high speed connections which most don't. Watching UHD sport requires just 30Mb/s any additional bandwidth makes no difference to picture quality. Online gaming needs even less bandwidth unless downloading updates etc. The fixation with speed is my view short sighted as low latency and jitter are just as, if not more, important.

No danger of any innovation, and anyone on FTTP only has 3 Ethernet Ports left to use on the current router. Having cancelled SkyQ altogether following the obvious reduction in quality content, the failure that is Paramount in barely HD, and the increase in compression of streams and downloads since Sky Glass that further reduce quality it's reaching the point where there are plenty of other providers like Vodafone who can offer me FTTP with at 500Mb to 1Gb and a Wifi 6E Router with sufficient ports for the same £34 I pay Sky for 500Mb and a lousy router.

From what I have herd a new router is coming back end off 2023 and thay are looking into WiFi 6e to make sure the infrastructure is suitable for it and devices we currently have to offer I.e q glass and streams

I wish Sky could change & do away with this DHCP option 61, would make things so much easier with choosing 3rd party kit that is compatible, but we can all have dreams....🤣

I don't see why Sky couldn't scrap DHCP Option 61 with firmware upgrades, upgrading all the exchanges to DHCPv6 PD.

Why would there be an issue, Sky deploys firmware upgrades in phases all the time.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreAlso making it easier for customers to use their own router almost certainly increases the support burden. It's much simpler for an ISP to say 'we don't prevent it but also won't help with it'.
