Why is the Sky router blocked from setting a network wide DNS?

I constantly get issues where the Sky DNS refuses to find any sites, especially after a power cut or something that interrupts the router. I know it is the DNS because I have NordVPN on m phone and laptop and if I enable it then the connections all work without an issue since this bypasses Sky altogether.

Ideally I would simply use a free DNS such as googles open ones (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) which I suspect will stop this happening when the router has these funny moments. Except the router only allows to set a DDNS and not a new DNS server forcing all traffic to go through the sky DNS.

I am guessing this is so Sky can reap the data going through and either use it or sell it and to be honest I wouldn't really care IF IT WORKED!

Given all the issues with getting 3rd party routers to work and the legal challenges that mean Sky shouldn't block or restrict access directly I wonder if this little DNS trick is actually totally legal and just working off no one really raising it as an issue.

So sky please either update the hubs to allow setting a choice of DNS or get your DNS server to actually work 100% of the time.

@Freigan If you device allows you to set whatever DNS server that you wish to use then just do so!

BT/EE (with twice as many subscribers as Sky) does the same thing: I suspect it's how their web filtering, as mandated by Parliamentary legislation, is facilitated.

Businesses on that kind of scale do tend to have buildings full of lawyers...

yeah, really helpful when you have 8-10 devices in a household, especially if you change them often like phones etc. Really helpful reply.
