Which cable do I need please?

7AE811D4-6DB2-47D9-B388-F9A2E949647D.jpeg

Hi, I've got this master socket. What kind of cable do I need to connect to my sky hub. The one from my previous home won't fit into the port on the master socket.
Picture 1: my new master socket

picture 2: my sky hub

picture 3: the cable from my previous address.
Thanks in advance

This is the cable I've got at the moment, it's from my previous home. The purple plug obviously fits into the Sky hub but the white one doesn't fit into my master socket. Please help with the appropriate cable to get for this connection. Sky only sent one cable (the one with the yellow plug). Thanks

That's not a 'master socket', which typically refers to an Openreach-branded phone faceplate with one or two ports (RJ11 for data and BT Jack for voice on a filtered master).  What you have there is some kind of proprietary modular faceplate with an ethernet socket, a coaxial aerial socket and (possibly) a telephone extension socket behind that shutter.

Is this in a new build or an apartment within a larger building?

Ah, OK: that's a clue that Sky are expecting to provision the address over FTTP, in which case no master socket is required (or relevant) but you do need an Openreach ONT ('fibre modem') with an incoming optical cable connection.

Re: Which cable do I need please?

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.  Yes it's a new build house. Does that mean I need a master socket then?

Re: Which cable do I need please?

Oh just seen your second reply. I'll look into what that is. Do you know if Sky supplies it or do I need to get it myself?

Re: Which cable do I need please?

Hi, thanks for the picture. Is Sky supplying this or do I need to reach out to whoever installed the open reach unit in the first place?

Re: Which cable do I need please?

Ok, I will check if there's one already installed. If there is, what else do I need to do then?

Re: Which cable do I need please?

Alot of new build have the BT master socket or ONT (Optical Network Termination unit) with a typical BT unit as pictured by some one helpfull  ( as well a the incoming satellite cables from the distribution system you can pick which rooms get connected up)  and is typicaly is in a cupboard.

some of those sockets can be RJ-11 like the cable that comes with the sky Hub and other routers but make sure you don't get ethernet and Phone RJ-11s mixed up.
If it's true FTTP you need an ethernet RJ-45 cable connected between your router and the ONT,,  with certain builds you can patch the ONT to that ethernet socket if your build allows that and have the router there nearer your equipment if that suits you and your wifi coverage.

I have often found that many new builds ethernet cabling was done by an electrician  likley without testing it I've lost count of how many times I have corrected new build ethernet cableing, enough to know that while most do get it right there are enough cowboy contracters who don't know what they are doing..
