Using a VPN with a PS5 new router?

Morning guys, I've read the best way to get a VPN to work with a PS5 is to use a router that lets you install the software directly on the router Express VPN do their own. My question is, is that the best way I'm guessing this can't be done with the Sky super fast router? If I get a say Night Hawk router can I just disconnect the Sky router plug the new one in in just enter my Sky ID and password and it'll work? Or is there more to it than that?

Correct, you'll need a VPN capable router to do that.

How you connect the router you buy will depend on what package & technology of broadband you have with Sky.

Can you tell us what broadband package you are on & whether you have an Openreach master socket or Openreach ONT in your home?

I have the one on the right with the lights on I'm signed up to Sky gigafast. What I'm trying to achieve is to been able to connect to American servers on my PS5 to play DMZ (Call of Duty) the language barrier is the problem with EU servers.

Okay great so you just need to purchase a router which is capable of DHCP Option 61 authentication. Then all you do is plug the router into the Openreach ONT and put the following string into the routers DHCP Option 61 Field: abc123@skydsl|abc123

As a start for you, the Netgear XR series supports DHCP Option 61 as do most of the Asus RT/AC/AX series. You'll need to check about VPN compatibility too though

@Wadsley+Warrior If you only want to change the server region you connect to then why not just do it via the options in the game?

Using a different router seems to me to be a rather expensive way to do something that can be done for free.

Hi Dave if it was only that easy unfortunately there is no options at all either in the PS5 menu or the game not even sure how to do it with a VPN but the Duma software will help you pick the servers you want I think.

When an VPN is in place and active on a router then by default every device behind the router appears to be located wherever in the world the VPN endpoint is.

Note that this will seriously annoy anyone else at the address trying to use, for example, Sky Television on-demand, or Netflix, or iPlayer (or any other geo-restricted service) and can have unfortunate side-effects for things like banking apps, online ordering etc.

Thanks Timmy having never used a VPN before I thought the software with something like Express VPN you'd be able to choose which device or devices you wanted to geolocate?

The difference is you need to train the router (assuming it has that ability) because the VPN is no longer software on individual devices to be switched on and off.

If you want to run a set-up as expected then an open-source firewall would be better at the LAN/WAN perimeter as that has serious routing abilities, eg: OPNsense would be able to selectively route a single device on the LAN through the VPN of which it supports a few and the rest can go via normal routing directly to the internet.

Its very easy on almost any router that allows a VPN to be configured. E.g. Asus routers have the option to either force all network clients via the VPN or just certain IP addresses
