Using ASUS RT-BE86U Instead of Sky Router

Hi All,

My switch to sky broadband completes tomorrow - 7th October from Vodafone. Full fibre 150mbps. I have received the new Sky router (SR213A-02-UK according to box which i havent opened) through the post but i dont want to use it or even take it out of the box. My ASUS RT-BE86U is setup and id prefer to keep using it.

Can an ASUS RT-BE86U be used in place of the Sky router?

What are the settings i need to change?

Do i need to plug the Sky router in first (once) or just keep everything as is and tweak the ASUS settings

Im in mainland UK

Thankyou

Re: Using ASUS RT-BE86U Instead of Sky Router

Hi @Me134,

I successfully used my RT-BE86U to connect to my Sky full fibre broadband. It worked immediately without changing any settings on my router from the old Vodafone settings i had. Later in the day the internet stopped working and i noticed it was not connected in the ASUS WAN page. I changed the 'WAN Connection Type' from PPPoE as it was with Vodafone to Automatic IP (DHCP) and it jumped straight on. Now its working perfectly.

Thanks for your help

@telegraph_007 @yes you can connect your Asus router to a Sky line. With luck it should connect straight away if your line supports DHCPv6 PD which 80+% of Openreach lines do

If you are unlucky then you can use the alternate DHCPv4 Option 61 option which uses a string of

           anything@skdsl|anyhting

Do not lose the Sky hub as that will be required to get.support from Sky if any faults occur

@telegraph_007 You won't have access to the landline phone BTW if that's a consideration.

Re: Using ASUS RT-BE86U Instead of Sky Router

So if my line is DHCPv6 PD i just clear out the old vodafone username and password under WAN account settings on the ASUS and that should be good?

If im unlucky and need to use DHCPv4 Option 61 i simply put username: anything@skdsl and password: anything? I dont see anything about DHCPv4 Option 61 on my ASUS WAN settings page so i assume its something that is used automatically should the line not be DHCPv6 PD

From a quick google:-

1. Log into your ASUS router web dashboard.
2. Go to Advanced Settings > WAN > Internet Connection.
3. Set the WAN Connection Type to Automatic IP (do not use PPPoE, which is only used in Ireland).
4. Scroll down to Special Requirement from ISP and look for Vendor Class Identifier (Option 60) or Client Identifier (Option 61).
5. In the Client Identifier (Option 61) field, type: anything@skydsl|anything

Excellent.

For the benefit of others in the future, it might be worth marking your previous post as an Answer- if you are able to do that.
