Upgraded WiFi, zero improvement

Hello

3 weeks ago I upgraded my WiFi from 150mbs to 300 and there has been zero improvement in download speed. When I run speed test results I get the same as before, if not worse on occasions.

Right now I'm downloading something and I'm getting 20-30mbs a second which is even worse than usual. Previously on the 150mbs package this would typically be 70-100mbs.

Not entirely sure what I'm getting out of this upgrade at the moment... any suggestions on how I can see improved dl speeds on the basis that my package is supposed to have doubled?

Thanks

You presumably upgraded your broadband connection.  That's not the same thing as WiFi.

Re: Upgraded WiFi, zero improvement

Does that not translate to an increase in download speed? Confused what I'm paying extra for if not

@RyanH455 No, you could have went to the 5Gb/s package and still had the same, download speed has many many deciding factor's not alone is the device that is connected and everything else in the loop.... The speed that is needed is what you think is required then cover the extra as a JIC factor! See if the sky help below does you any good!

Fundamentally you're paying for extra speed delivered over optical fibre and ethernet cable as far as the router.  Whether that translates to better throughput to WiFi devices depends on multiple factors including the capabilities of the devices themselves, the local wireless environment, the physical fabric of the property and even what the neighbours are doing.

It's also worth considering that higher bandwidth at the router can enable more devices to get 'enough' to do what they need to do, rather than higher peak speed to any in particular.

Thanks both for the replies

Done some digging and turns out my router was defaulting to the 2.4Ghz channel  for whatever reason which is capped at 144mbs, seperated the channels out, manually connected to the 5.2Ghz and actual DL speed has increased massively!

@RyanH455 That's the problem the device does most off the negotiation to where it wants to be, but it should not have been so low even on the 2.4Ghz band unless your device is a poor 1x1 array device that is 70Mb/s max and would be by default at or around the 50Mb/s mark then throw in distance to get lower! 5Ghz you more than likely will be up near the max speed but you don't say so not going to suggest!

As you have been able to split the Bands you must be running the SR203 sky Broadband Hub or the sky Q Hub!
