Unstable wi fi

We have full fibre broadband which has worked broadly ok since early August. Recently it has glitched slightly so the number of wi fi bars will dip slightly on the iPhone for example, sometimes the sky hub connection goes and then comes back. This evening it's much more unstable with iPhone (14) dropping to 5G, two bars, 3 bars. Same throughout the flat. According to Sky Q settings on TV, the hub is connected. MySky service checker isn't able to say whether there is an issue with hub connection (it just spins round) and same for devices and setup. I rebooted the router -

but problems persist. Looking at router settings online, bandwidth is set to 20 rather than 20/40 and MhZ is synchronised.  The desired channel is set to auto. I've got an older hub (see pic).  As you can see it's all green lights on the router. On down detector no issues showing up. MySky does say no local outages etc. Any tips?

Re: Unstable wi fi

@GrahamG76 You only want to have a 20Mhz bandwidth on the 2.4Ghz band, and a 80Mhz bandwidth on the 5Ghz band, auto allows the hub to skip find the best channel to be on, helps in a condensed area with loads off homes/hubs competing for the same bands.

The SR203 that you have is quite good at keeping itself right in operating, but if you do have band clash from other hubs around then you will have to do a analyzer on a mobile to go look at what is around you!

Re: Unstable wi fi

Thanks - at the moment it's on 20 but there's also a '20/40' option - is it worth switching to 20/40?

Re: Unstable wi fi

@GrahamG76 Looking at them you reset the hub 2 hours ago, you must be on a FF 300Mb/s speed and also connected to a CF CityFibre connection as the Up/Down is displayed as symmetrical. Is that all correct so far. Looks also like you have nothing LAN Ethernet connected, and just using the 2.4/5Ghz wireless only?

That's all correct, yes

Re: Unstable wi fi

@GrahamG76 On the plus side, that SR203 hub is a rock steady device, the 300/300 should by NO means stretch it to the max as it can easily handle that, the wifi going in out is a little concerning though so hopefully you are not fighting another hub for Frequency when you mention the Flat. Tonight if you are not needing wifi would power it off for a couple hours and switch it back on after that period!

Since you managed to get the stat's fine, keep an eye on the logs and if you are getting WANoE errors micro drops then the times will not stay synced and reset back so easy to spot, they also flag up well in the log file, BUT that hub keeps only about 24hrs off time before it start's to over write the earlier entries, so keep on top off it when looking!

Re: Unstable wi fi

Thanks - would it be ok to turn it off overnight, ie for several hours?

Also is it worth rebooting the Sky Q box? It's in the living room but I know acts a kind of wi fi hotspot. In the past when wi fi bars on the phone have dipped, it's been a sign that the Sky Q box has lost connection with the hub. That doesn't seem to be the case post full fibre and it is connected. But I wondered if it was worth trying. When the wi fi glitches it can affect the Sky Q (eg it will say it's not connected to the internet then come back on). In the recent past the glitches have been temporary but tonight wi fi is dropping down then off, 5G, three bars, two bars etc. I used the Airport Utility scanner. A neighbour has a Sky router and we seem to be on different frequencies which shift around. As far as I know this is a long-standing situation (the neighbour is not a new Sky customer) and we've had no big issues until now.

Re: Unstable wi fi

@GrahamG76 That's fine, you are on the right way off going about it all, and yes your sky Q will be hotspot assisting the wi-fi for you, also not the greatest weather past day so may be a slight knock with that, not seeing anything dramatic myself, but also not using my old trusty SR203/SE210 as they are back boxed up! Just checked running 500/70Mb/s so full speed no issue!
