Sky wifi speed

I have 500mbps and im getting there or there abouts via ethernet so no issues there. Now if im sat 2 metres from the router and use the speed test app to see wifi speed, it reports less than 300mbps most of the time.

Is this normal as I don't think it is, as if I cant get 500mbps or near sat 2 metres from the router it's not giving me much upstairs.  It's only around 50mbps wifi upstairs.

Any ideas?

Re: Sky wifi speed

Here's a few ideas

  1. Not all broadband hubs are equal in quality of signal strength and speed. This router costs £479 and I suspect it would offer a stronger signal and marginally better WiFi speeds if you were sat 2 metres away. You could purchase 2 units from the start for just £899.99 and I'm fairly sure that would improve your WiFi speeds upstairs. But would it be worth that expenditure?  🤔
  2. Different phones, laptops, etc are not equal with the quality of reception & speed with their WiFi cards/receivers. So I have  phones recording differing speed results taken from the same place on the same signal.
  3. Many broadband users (myself included) don't need or wouldn't notice slower broadbdand & WiFi speeds in everyday use. I have 2 separate broadband connections to my router, 900/900 & 80/20 down/up. I plugged out the 900 connection to test the slow line and forgot to plug it back in. I only noticed when I saw the lead plugged out hours later, and I have over 60 devices connected to my network.
  4. Don't be obsessed by speed test results (and yes I am 😁).  Just ran a speed test in my home office on the first floor using a Dell Windows laptop. Speed was 892/784, 5ms ping connected to a Wavlink docking station which is wired to an Asus XT9 node, which is wirelessly connected to the main XT9 hub in the hallway by the front door.

LSS... enjoy using your broadband. Speed and reach of your WiFi can often be improved by router placement, additional Sky equipment, or purchasing your own mesh system.

Best of luck

My current phone maxs out at around 300Mbps, my previous one will give me the full 500Mbps+ so it can entirely depend on the hardware you're testing on, not that I'd notice the difference on either phone.

WiFi will always drop off with distance and with walls, ceilings, radiators and other electrical devices in the path.

You may need to consider either the Sky WiFi Max add-on package or perhaps purchasing a 3rd party mesh system (which remains yours regardless of ISP used and would be my own personal choice).

Edit: around £100 will get you a 2 or 3 pack of decent wifi pods that will give you a much better signal around the house.
