I absolutely agree with the comment that 'fibre is the way to go' but I'm not sure about PONs.

 

For me, the structure of PONs is too closely related to that of the DOCSIS networks that eventually became over subscribed and failed to continue to provide the expected end user experience.

 

Although the optical split for OR is currently 32  the technical possibilities are 128 or more.

The available bandwidth on the segment may increase from the GPON 2.4Gb/s but commercial pressures will see some trade-offs being made.

 

In practice, don't expect the FTTP revolution to be the panacea that many expect.
