Sky will presumably attempt to detect and block VPN use with Stream pucks to prevent them straying overseas.

Didn't really answer my question.....if he did its far too technical.
I just want to know if I can connect my VPN to a Sky Stream Puck....has anyone managed to do this??

However while I haven't tried it like @TimmyBGood I doubt it would work as Sky use various systems to prevent the Stream units being used anywhere but at the UK residential address in the account as you will have. Agreed by buying the service. Those systems are likely to be similar to other streaming services in not allowing use of known VPN addresses etc. Not totallysurprisingly Sky don't document of allow detailed discussion of their security systems.

Thanks Chrissee,
You state that Sky do not approve of allowing VPNs as they do not wish for them to be used abroad.... well I'm in the UK and a UK subscriber....as for not discussing their security well a VPN is a security system for individuals and if I wish to have this feature as added security this should be my choice and not Skys.
I will ask the question again has anyone managed to add a VPN to their Sky Puck and if so how can I do this?

Certainly, but Sky (or any other content provider) doesn't have to compromise its own systems, contracts, distribution licences and other commercial arrangements to facilitate consumption of its subscription services under those circumstances.

Users cannot 'add' anything to a Stream puck: it's a closed proprietary hardware/software/server environment managed by Sky. If you are referring to running a puck behind a router-level VPN, that's different, and I wouldn't expect it to work.

Find out more@Craigybaby55 You won't get the answer you are looking for here, it doesn't matter if you are in the UK when using a VPN, as stated Sky use various methods to detect that on their streaming service to prevent illegal use, you won't get advice here on how to circumvent those restrictions.
I understand using a VPN for security purposes but when using any legal streaming service you're going encounter issues that the service provider won't help with.

One possibility with router-level VPN would be to exempt the Stream puck IP address from the VPN routing (typically referred to as a 'split tunnel') Alternatively, run device level VPN on operating systems which permit software client installation (where it is more desirable anyway) and leave closed hardware such as pucks as they are.
If you seriously consider the presence of a Stream puck or similar to be a security threat then there's no real option but to remove it entirely: like any such device it's simply not under your control.

A crude analogy: you can choose to brick up all your doors and windows to deter burglars if you wish, but you can't then reasonably complain about the lack of Amazon deliveries...

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreCan I ask what security you think you'd be getting by connecting your Sky stream puck to a VPN connection?
VPN's have their uses for certain tasks/applications but running a VPN 24/7 on a device thats just designed to stream TV/OD content is no more secure than running it without a VPN.
