Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

Hi, I have sky Q 2 tb box and a mini box in my bedroom, the issue is i have upgraded to 500mb broadband, in my living room i get this speed but in the bedroom (it's just through the wall) i get 120mbps, now if i turn off the mini box i get the full 500mbps in the bedroom, so my question is, without turning off the mini box, how do i get my devices to connect to the router and not the mesh?

i was thinking replacing the mini with an Apple TV but i dont think the sky go app is full HD?

open to suggestions

thanks

Thats typical of the Sky Q system, its based on a mesh system from 10yrs ago so having nodes decreases overall speed in favour of range. You could replace the Q box with another device if it satisfy your viewing needs. Alternatively you could run an ethernet cable to it, then switch WiFi off completely.

Re: Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

@jamesn123  thanks for the reply i cant really run a cable unless i drill through the wall, id rather not do that. Is there any way to have a mini box but not have it as the mesh network... seems silly i need to use as you say 10 year old kit... and tbh I could say to sky im not getting their advertised speeds due to their hardware, so either a solution or stop charging for a mini box, id happily keep paying if they had an hd or 4k app i could use, like they have sky glass so can obv do it...

Re: Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

@jamesn123 sorry just so I understand, when you say run a cable and turn off WiFi, is that from router to mini hub, or cable from router to sky q box and cable from router to mini box?

Thanks

Your getting way over the guaranteed speeds for WiFi, which is 25mbps. https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-wifi-max

The large guarantee figure they give you is line speed which is attainable via the ethernet.

Had you considered Sky Stream? This is just basically a mini box but it runs over broadband instead off a main box. It also doesnt have any meshing on it so wouldnt mess with your WiFi speed.

You can run the cable from any box part of the mesh, so the hub, main Q box, booster or other Q mini

@Libertine82

I'm a bit out of my depth here with Q but I believe you can connect the mini box by ethernet to either the main box or the Hub. You could try powerline adapters to provide an ethernet connection if cabling isn't an option. Just buy from somewhere with a no quibble return because they rely on your mains wiring, which may or may not be up to the task.

Edit

@jamesn123beat me to it!

@FLC

Powerline with Q is a bad idea. The latency can cause stuttering or complete disconnection... I have personal experience 😅

Re: Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

@FLC @jamesn123 ahh thank you so much, so from what you say, i get as device that plugs into a socket (does it need to be wall or is an extension ok) then connect vis Ethernet to router, turn off WiFi? That would be a good solution tbh

re the sky stream, I already have sky so dont want a new sub and also i like 4k satellite stream for 4k older on the tv, its really just i need good WiFi for the ps portal in the bedroom and the mesh network is killing it..

thanks again for taking the time to replay

As I said I wouldnt recommend powerline, it can play havoc with Q but you could try it if you want.

Sky Stream isnt an additional sub, it replaces Sky Q & offers 4k as well. In fact many people have said that the picture quality in 4k on stream is better than Q.

You could just look to get your own 3rd party mesh solution to use instead of the Sky WiFi. This would probably offer much higher speeds for your PS portal.

Re: Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

@jamesn123 oh so should i call sky and ask if I can swap to sky stream do i still get sports and moves in 4k HDR and the same price? Obviously you dont work with them, i get that, but that does seem like a good solotuion, of course unless the internet goes down...

** i will try the plug option first thing i have one somewhere

@Libertine82
Pricing is different for everyone, you may find its cheaper than Q, or a bit more expensive its all down to your account. But yes Stream offers the same as Q in terms of 4K HDR channels. The main difference with stream is that there is no traditional hard drive in it so you dont record locally like you do with Q, you stream it all from On Demand.

I would take some time to review Sky Stream info and make your own decision, but it is a good option if other solutions dont work for you in terms of ethernet, 3rd party mesh or powerline.

Re: Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

@jamesn123 thanks ill look into it, ill try my plug first then call sky see what they can do, only thing i may not like is live football and a delay... not sure if they have got that working now with fibre, so my apps dont tell me if a goal went in before i see it..

again thanks for your time 🙂

The sports main event channel has a low latency mode now which is only a few seconds behind Sky Q

Re: Sky Mini Box Slow mesh WiFi (solutions)

@jamesn123 sorry one for thing, if I run a cable from my router to the mini box and turn off the mini WiFi do I need to connect the main sky q box by Ethernet too? As I won't have enough ports on the router 😞
