Sacm phone call supposedly from SKY

Today I received a call on my Sky landline pretending to be someone from Sky .

They said that my internet has been accessed and that I need to go on my mobile phone & PC to check internet speeds. The person who phoned had a strong Indian accent and from the background noise it was obviously some kind of call centre, however the number they called from 01782****** which would indicate it was a Stoke-on-Trent number.

The Who Called me? website Reports the following:

"This number, primarily associated with fraudulent activities, where callers impersonate SKY, is a landline operated by Virgin Media Limited, and is located in Stoke-on-Trent, England"

They asked questions about how I used my broadband banking, buying goods etc and I stopped them as they were asking me to download some software to remove any dangerous software. I  said "You are a scammer, do not phone me again". and I blocked their number.

BE CAREFUL., if they have tried this with me then they will try this with others. If a Sky representative is reading this could you issue a warning to Sky customers.

@MartyConfused  It's a well know scam, no ISP would ever call you like this.

You were right in stopping them and not downloading their software which would have left you open to hacking.

You should be aware that scammers can spoof numbers and that the number itself may be a genuine customer phone number on the VM network sio you can't rely on such info.

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.
