The wi-fi led only lights up on the SD501 when the sky+ box is switched off,it immediately goes out when sky+box switched on and the network display shows both Broadband and On Demand as "Fail"

That's pretty antique hardware (as is the Sky box it's presumably connected to). Assuming you've tried resetting everything (router, Sky box, Mini connector) then you might need to source a replacement for a few pounds on eBay.
