Router

Sunday morning there was a massive thunderstorm and since then my wifi has said connected no Internet. And sign into WiFi with some troubleshooting options, I've tried all them and nothing. An engineer came out in the week and said I need a new router to be sent out. Being inpatient I bought a new router and plugged it in but I'm having the exact same issue. Could it be something other than the router? It's a Tenda AC8 from amazon

Is your Sky broadband over FTTC or FTTP?

For FTTC, non-Sky routers require manual configuration (and some won't work at all)

For FTTP, some non-Sky routers will function but only if a particular form of Openreach technology is upstream, and that doesn't have national coverage.

@Esiwbob

FTTC = You plug your hub into the telephone socket

FTTP = You plug your hub into the white Openreach ONT on your wall.

Re: Router

@jamesn123 it plugs into a white thing on a wall but there's 2 sockets, and long thin 1 and a small square 1 it plugs into the top small square 1. And how would I find the details to manual set up?

Okay so your on FTTC.
For FTTC you need a router with a modem built in or a seperate modem to plug into. It looks like the Tenda AC8 doesnt have a modem built in so you'd need one before you could connect.

So then it's FTTC broadband, and a non-Sky router cannot just plug in and work.

Re: Router

@jamesn123 @TimmyBGood would I be able to plug the non working sky box into the new 1 then? I don't know why the sky box isn't working, it turns on but just doesn't connect to the Internet. the 2 outside lights turn on but the middle led doesn't.  I can connect to other devices that are on the same WiFi too

Unfortunately it's the primary router (connected to the phone socket) which has to authenticate against the broadband circuit.  I suspect that make cannot do so, but some other forum users may know otherwise.

@Esiwbob

If your Sky hub is powering up but just not connecting to the line this suggests its a problem with your line, not the Sky hub. Therefore using a 3rd party hub is very unlikely to solve the issue.
