Possible to connect to Hub through wall ethernet?

I've moved into a new house, and setup Sky Max Hub. Its connected to BT Openreach through an ethernet cable. There are several other ethernet sockets in other rooms. Is it possible to use these wall sockets to connect my computer to the hub with ethernet, rather than the  wifi I'm using now?

Yes, as long as the ethernet cable is either contiguous, physically patched to be so or logically switched to form a legitimate ethernet topology.

What does that mean?

Ethernet isn't mains cable where any socket works to supply power: it has to have a particular layout for devices to function.

Essentially each device has to be on a separate cable back to the router, except where cables meet at an ethernet switch.

Unfortunately in the absence of anything like a wiring diagram, connection is distinctly hit and miss.

@Arvandor593 Take a few pictures off the Socket external, the main point that they all gather at, ie in the cupboard near where the ONT is placed, there may be a multiple 4 way Ethernet connection point at that location!

Not if it was put in by an electrician 😕

Re: Possible to connect to Hub through wall ethernet?

@TimmyBGood Correct, they do struggle to get it all sorted, did my sister's new build all the points ended up in the cupboard and the ONT was there, so slammed the Router in there wan connected the ONT and patched the four ethernet jacks to the back of the router then tested each wall socket was live and at full speed. Just enough wireless wi-fi signal out to the home, but she did prefer to have the sockets live. If they would only pick one point and double cable it at least you could get the Router out the cupboard!🙄

Here is a photo. This is a newly built house, and this was installed by the developer.

Ignore the HyperOptic box. That came with the house. Its not switched on or connected to anything.

Re: Possible to connect to Hub through wall ethernet?

@Arvandor593 So you have already patched the ONT from OR and have the sky Hub sitting out somewhere on the other end of that cable, you look to have 5 multiple connection points in the cupboard and therefore there will be FIVE points out in total throughout the rooms!

And as usual they never think to mark or leave indication where they goto, at least you will know that point where you are plugged into!

Re: Possible to connect to Hub through wall ethernet?

@Arvandor593 Will be up at my sister's later this week to fit a new caliper assembly on her wheelchair, been a year since i installed it all in the cupboard for her, and her joiner was going to put a shelf very similar to your arrangement to sit the hub on with the TWO BBU units, but NO doubt not done yet, but will take a couple off photo's as it is when there.

No Choice but to put the sky Hub in the cupboard to liven up the connections, hub will require you to get another 5 Cat5E patch cables and if you want all the points live you will need to get a small 5 port switch. The Tp-Link TL-SG105S works fine on the SR203 hub for sure!

External wireless Wi-Fi if it does not get out enough from the location now, you will have to take care off by a wired WAP, but you cannot have everything in life simple!

Re: Possible to connect to Hub through wall ethernet?

My hub is connected to an Ethernet socket in the living room.

I'm wondering whats the point of having so many sockets built. Do they expect me to have half a dozen separate routers running?

A Sky Hub has four ethernet ports, so with one used for the ONT can support three wall sockets.  Adding one or more ethernet switches (not routers) can expand this number to more than any household needs.

This is where the topology I mentioned above comes into play.

Re: Possible to connect to Hub through wall ethernet?

@Arvandor593 No, but if they had double cabled only ONE point you could have done it all from that position, Home builders DO NOT know how to do Networking correctly!

The trouble is the ONT/WAN it has to be Direct one - one point, NO switches in that at ALL!

Something like this:

You can then put a separate wireless access point in the living room if you want.
