Poor WIFI service

WIFI service is very poor or non-existant at times. 

Have re-booted router with only limited success.

Have discovered our connection to Openreach is over half a mile away despite there being a cabinet 150 yads away at the bottom of our street.

seems crazy.

Unfortunately the topology of the legacy copper network isn't particularly logical: it was only intended to carry voice traffic (which essentially isn't distance-sensitive) rather than high frequency internet data signalling which very much is affected.
