No RJ11 connection in new house
Hi there,
My daughter has just moved into a new flat , she ordered a sky package 67mb BB (no fibre available) , the hub as arrived and is due to activate on Monday 18th, however the previous owner does not seem to have had a standard telephone set up, what we can see is a telephone line but with a ethernet connection , the sky hub I believe must have a RJ11 connection from the phone cable, I am checking but dont believe you can have a convertor from ethernet to RJ11, as they are different setup/technology, 8 wires vs 4 wire.
So any advice help appreciated.

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
@Bigfreddieboy Watch the video on the Sky Max selection! Rj11 is actually a 6pin connector although a lot off suppliers actual drop the outer 2 pins so it does look like only has 4! You do need to double check that it is a RJ45 but search will throw up if you need it, rj45 to rj11 adapter.

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
@Bigfreddieboy Do not make the assumption that the connection is just a possible phone line, it could be but also may have more funtion's if access dependant entry system is building installed!

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
A lot of the RJ45 sockets on telecomms equipment today are actually dual purpose and will take both RJ45 or RJ11. The RJ11 may seem a little "loose", as it fits into a recess in the middle of the RJ45 socket, but it works fine.

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
@Bigfreddieboy look for a master socket with Openreach or BT branding which will have a rj11 or a post office telephone socket never rj45. In practice a broadband connection uses only two cores and uses simple telephone cable not twisted pair ethernet cable. Avoid connecting the Sky hub to any extention wiring beyond the master socket.
It is quite common where a property has been previously used for example a Virgin Media service for the Openreach socket to have been removed - Virgin engineers do this as a "service`' for their customers but never tell Openreach who naturally assume their line is servicable. When a new resident moves in you get this issue. The solution is to fit a new master socket which takes a few days but is pretty routine and can be done by a Sky engineer or by Openreach. If there is definitely no master socket your daughter needs to call Sky who will areange to get the work done.

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
The middle four pins on an RJ45 are wired to the same pattern as an RJ11, so provided an RJ45 will fit the sockets at both ends, an ethernet cable can be used in place of an RJ11 cable.

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
@Deb3000 Perfect example, sure you can even get a cable RJ11 to RJ45 with the preset length required!

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
Yes, I’ve used one, although it was one I made up to solve a particularly loose RJ11 issue at one of the places I was on-call for.
It was when these things first appeared on the market. The later ones seem to be a bit better fit and not quite so loose.

@Deb3000 We must be on the same wavelength i pretty much prefer to make and crimp all my own cables!
Are you on a sky connection or the BT/EE Darkside as yet!

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
They're installing Sky FTTP tomorrow. Only 150Mb/s but that's twice what I was getting on BT FTTC and for a fraction of the cost. I phoned and requested OR, so hopefully that's what I'll get but CF will do. Be interesting to see what happens.
Just looking at the Sky puck. This thing pulls down some data doesn't it? My usage seems to have gone up by a factor of 10. Mind you, I tend to leave Sky news on all day and on the old BT box it was coming through the aerial. Not looked at it closely yet but I think the puck is all internat based HD.

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
@Deb3000 Pretty sure it is internet based but does have the old council Aerial input i think and software switchable between the modes, no doubt you will soon find out. FF500 and lowest sustained so far 200Mb/s when it got real busy, sure that was one off the football finals so everyone and there granny was steaming it, apart from ME!
Don't take any flack off the installers i did the same, M J Quinn guy came to install, not a scubie doo so hunted him, did throw the install back 21 day's but OR came did just as i requested,

Re: No RJ11 connection in new house
I'm not that bothered which it is at the end of the day, so long as they do a neat and tidy job. If it is CF it just means BT will get the pleasure of stumping up for an OR install if I go back to them in two years time. Plenty of room on the wall in the hall.
Anyway, I'll leave it there as I think we owe @Bigfreddieboy an apology. I seem to have hyjacked your thread mate, so my apologies.
