No Phone after Full fibre upgrade

Just had full fibre upgrade from sky internet is all fine. However my phone's which all are plugged via BT sockets don't work. The engineer said could take 24 hours however after reading all the forum comments my phone system is not plugged into the router so I'm not sure it will work at all . Surely the engineer never said a word

Were BT providing your phone services?

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

@RogueTrooper your phone needs to be plugged into your broadband Hub. It won't work from a wall socket.

No socket other than the one on the rear of the Sky Hub is going to work, and ISPs don't offer an option to activate them.  You can either plug one corded handset in there, or invest in a DECT system.

Note that BT Digital Voice phones won't work either, and Sky doesn't offer a 'wireless telephone adapter'.

Re: No Phone after Full fibre upgrade

My home phone is provided as part of my original Sky package which included the broadband I only upgraded to full fibre so nothing else changed.  Sky I believe uses open reach/BT for the phone

Great just would have been nice if the engineer mentioned this he told my other half the phones would come on within 24 hours.

You no longer have a live copper 'phone line' at the address, which is a fairly fundamental change...

The national Openreach optical network.  BT in this context is a rival ISP.

That was presumably a reference to the voice service at the Hub, not 'the phones'.  Handsets plugged into wall sockets now have no electrical connection over a copper phone circuit to the outside world, and so cannot function.

The physical connection is rather significant because the glass fibre of an optical circuit cannot carry an electrical signal for analogue phone handsets to use.

The connection is the remit of Openreach. 'BT' is not involved: they are a competitor to Sky in the ISP market.

'BT Group' owns Openreach Ltd, and 'BT Wholesale & Ventures' supplies rental products to multiple ISPs including 'BT' and Sky: that's a legacy of British Telecom privatisation in the 1980s.
