Newbie Question On Basic Broadband and Network Installation

Hi

I have been a virgin media customer for the last 30 years or so and have just moved to a new build which has been wired for Virgin and Open Reach. I had hoped to continue using Virgin but no one knows when it will be live. They have installed an Open Reach FTTP box in the understairs cupboard with a standard telephone socket next to it.

I have an upstairs office that i used to connect my computer and NAS drive to the Virgin router using CAT5 cables.

I would like to replicate something like this. I will be enrolling with Sky and using one of the pucks for TV. The location of the TV is the lounge which is the wall behind the understairs cupboard where the Open Reach box is located (this also has a telephone socket). Whats the smart way of still be keeping my computer hard wired to my NAS, having a telephone in the lounge and being able to watch tv?

My thoughs were, install the sky router in the understairs cupboard next to the Open Reach box, can i then plug a lead from the sky router into the adjacent phone socket to extend it into the lounge socket. Then upstairs in my office, get a wireless extender with a CAT5 into a switch or something?

Any help would be most apprecated.

No, ethernet signal requires four cable cores for 100Mbs and eight for gigabit: it cannot transit over a phone pair.

If the property isn't wired with ethernet cable I'd suggest you investigate Powerline adapters.

Hi

Thanks for reply.

Sorry, didnt make myself clear. What i meant when i said plug the router into the adjacent phone socket was to carry the phone signal into the spare phone socket in the lounge, so i can see answer machine calls in lounge. The house has been pre-wired with 2 sockets in lounge and the one in the understairs cupboard.

No, that also doesn't work because the VOIP socket on a router isn't compatible with extension wiring: it's intended to host either an analogue phone handset or a DECT basestation.

Re: Newbie Question On Basic Broadband and Network Installation

So, I'm guessing having the router in an understairs cupboard is not the best location?

Almost certainly not, despite housebuilders apparently believing otherwise.

It's worth remembering that the link between the ONT and the router is over Ethernet, so that may be the best way to locate it somewhere more convenient.
