New to FTTP - is the Sky Hub necessary?

I'm moving from Virgin to FTTP, just got activated today.

So there's an ONT device in my house, and the Sky Hub connects to the ONT.

In my current setup, I have the Virgin Super Hub to modem mode, and then I connect a D-Link DIR-882 router in as a replacement.

With Sky, does the ONT act as the 'modem', or is it still the Sky Hub that is the 'modem'? i.e. can I just connect my DIR-882 to the ONT directly and have it work, or do I need to connect my router to Sky Hub instead?

The Sky Hub acts as a router, the ONT is basically an optical version of a modem.

For the router you are using to connect to Sky it needs to support DHCP Option 61 with the credentials for Option 61 'anything@skydsl|anything' without the single quotes. Sky also support DHCPv6 PD in 80% of broadband exchanges as an alternative to DHCP Option 61.

Re: New to FTTP - is the Sky Hub necessary?

Just tried to put the DIR-882 into the ONT and turned on DHCPv6 PD but that doesn't seem to connect.

Looks like I'll just set the sky hub to 192.168.1.1 with wifi off, and plug my existing router in (192.168.0.1) so that everything will just connect and work as before.

Would I run into any issues with this setup?  @mae-3

You will have double NAT but in most cases, this doesn't cause an issue.
