New router to use with sky hub

Hi
I currently have FTTP connected with Sky and am using the SKY HUB provided.

Im finding the stabiulity and range of wifi at times terrible and looking at getting another router and access points.

My Set up is a BT Openreach ONT box connected to the SKY hub. I currently use the Sky hub to connect my phone which i need and use the Sky wifi to connect my sky Q boxes and Minis (i'm hoping to in time connect these boxes by powerlin and cable so wont require to have the wifi on)

The advise im after is could i purchase a Asus router and connect this via ethernet to the sky hub and then use the Asus router for the wifi. I would then run a switch from this router and connect up various in Wall access points and a ceiling access point downstairs where im having the issues with the wifi signal.

Having very limited network knowledge is this possible and what would i need to do to set up the Asus router and Sky HUB to run like this.

Many thanks

Yes, you can add an Asus ethernet wireless router in the configuration that you mention.

The mode of the Asus router needs to be configured into a wireless access point mode.

The Asus router then connects to the Sky Hub via one of its ethernet ports in this configuration.

The AsusZenWifi XT8/9 will work as a wireless mesh with all units in access point mode successfully done by many community members on the Sky forum.

@hpsims77 you can run TP-Link Deco units in access point mode behind a Sky hub - I used that set up for a year without issue.

Re: New router to use with sky hub

Why not just connect an Asus or TPLINK direct to the ONT box itself? Why daisy chain?

Because @hpsims77  uses the phone which would be lost if the Sky hub is replaced.

Re: New router to use with sky hub

As mentioned I use the phone which needs connecting to the hub and also until I hardwire my sky box and sky Q box I need the sky hub to send the sky WiFi to connect the boxes.

Not in access point mode. Dhcp 61 is only used to authentic with sky servers when you want to replace the sky hub. You should find an access point mode on all 3rd party routers

@hpsims77 sounds like a sensible set up but to fuly optimise turn the wifi off on the Sky hub and each of the Sky Q TV boxes as you use ethernet. The do that on the Q boxes navigate to settings but enter 0,0,1 before select to open a hidden menu where you will find the controls to turn off the 2 wifi bands.

Re: New router to use with sky hub

Is it not possible to just replace the hub entirely and plug the phone into the new router rather than have two sitting around?

Edit: In fact don't the Sky Q mini boxes lose their hotspot capabilities if not connected to a Sky routers WiFi or connected directly by ethernet?

Unfortunately @Anonymous  Sky's voice line over IP service requires a Sky hub as the line simply doesnt work with third party kit. It isn't what we know as a VOIP service. BT's service is similar.
