New 500mb but more like 70/100/130/250mb
Hi guys, I hope you're all well.
I've just moved to Sky from Virgin (mainly due to Sky being cheaper) and am. regretting it.
On the day of the install things seemed to be OK and I was getting around 450mb over wifi across our 3 floor house which has plasterboard walls. I have the white hub, which I believe is supposed to be the better of the 2.
But over the days the speed has been terrible. The hub is in the sitting room and here I get around 450mb. But everywhere else it's terrible, especially my bedroom where I get between 30 - 70mb. The third floor gets around 250mb, which is odd as it's 2 floors up.
And the speed fluctuates by the second and I've noticed this as I've become a speed-test freak! 😜
I've spoken with Sky, who have offered me the pods at £4pm but I refuse to pay this as something clearly is wrong on their part as with my Virgin wifi I was getting 550mb across the entire house without fail.
Is there something I can do to speed things up other than purchase more equipment, in which case I mirgin.ight as well have stuck with Virgin.
Thank you

Re: New 500mb but more like 70/100/130/250mb
Hi Jim, thanks for replying. I had the Virgin 500mb package.
I just done some more testing but this time on my Mac and this time I was getting around 350mb in my bedroom, but as soon as it hit 350 I could see it drop straight down to 100ish. And this happened everytime I tested. But my iPhone would register around 70mb at the same spot. Really really odd. On Virgin, it was constantly 500+ on all devices.

@A1ps Was more off what VM equipment that you had, i hit 500 no matter where in the home speed wise when it is available to do and the external is not busy, but it does take two Asus routers and two Asus AP's all meshed to do so, but 50's home with solid brick walls to contend with!
The old SR203 with it's single SE210 was resonable. External do not care about, internal is what i need!
Try the very detailed speed test below, will give you a lot off info to look at!

Ahh, no idea what router I had, but it's one from around 2 years ago.
Thanks for the link to the speed test. So far, I've been using the Ookla speed test app.
I'd love to go for a MESH system like you, but just cannot justify the additional cost. Plus there's the principle aspect. Why should we have to pay extra when the reception is just so bad. I appreciate there may be some slow down due to environmental factors, but to have 70mb is just unacceptable from Sky.

It's the sky max hub. I've read that the black broad band hub may be better for reception. You can also use other routers with the black hub.

@A1ps Having never used the sky Max hub cannot say how good/bad it is, but two things seems to stand out on it from settings and one off them is NON adjustable and you wold have to look on a device that can show you what band the 5Ghz is operating in but it does seem to like Auto Channel really high band which is stupid because higher you go harder it gets to keep the signal, that's why the 6Ghz is so tough and you need to be sitting right on top off the Hub to max speed it. Second is the wpa mode, but as you are mostly fruit flavoured devices but i would well try the wpa2-psk operation whic you have to adjust in the app to see how it goes, and tune your fruities back for the security complaints.
The SR203 and it's SE210 booster that i used still have and are sitting back in there boxes, did cover most off the home, BOTH where needed to do so, across 2 levels, SR upstairs with the SE downstairs, AND i do not care about speed, steady operation is all that is needed, for that reason FF500 is required, when the Network is busy Externally then sustained at 200Mb/s is the lowest seen so far, but home is well covered for that speed!

Re: New 500mb but more like 70/100/130/250mb
Thank you Jim for the tips.
I looked at the settings of hen ub on The sky app and I can see that it may be possible to turn the WiFi OFF. If that is the case, would I be able to buy a better router or MESH product and use that instead? I'd rather not as I'd then be giving in to Sky's lack of customer service in not providing a booster, but at least I'll then get good reception.
Also, what kind of device can I use to detect whegher I'm using 5g or 6g? Would an iPhone work?

@A1ps You need to go evaluate what you had and paid for with VM as to against what you now have with sky, VM hide the cost and give you what you need, sky don't but when it is not able to work in your home then that's it, Max extra is required!

Re: New 500mb but more like 70/100/130/250mb
I was paying £17.20 at Virgin for 500mb and had 3 wifi pods at no additional cost when in the early days of my contract I was struggling to get the 500mb. But after a couple of months the pods were no longer required as they sent me their newest router.
Sky on the other hand charge an amount to entice and knowing many won't be abke to teach the optimum speed and then charge more for us to be able to hit the advertised speed.

Must admit, I'm thinking the same. I just need to work out the logistics as I work from home so cannot be without internet at all.
