We've had a booster and also change router which was a 2017 model. However my son (who games) plays fifa it slows down and lags. Not sure what to check / suggest?

If the WiFi conditions in your home are not ideal (e.g. you have neighbouring WiFi networks, noisy appliances etc) then no amount of boosters is going to resolve lag while gaming.
Additionally boosters are designed to increase WiFi coverage at the expense of speed & latency which is not ideal for gaming either.
If your son wants a stable gaming experience you ideally need to use ethernet, if a direct ethernet connection is not possible then powerline adapters could be a good alternative for you.

Thanks for your reply. He has a sky mini box in his room and an Ethernet from that into his play station. Is that what you suggest?

No because the Q Mini box is still receiving its internet connection wirelessly so its still subject to the interference.
Like I said you need to directly wire the console to the main Sky Hub. Either via long ethernet cable or using a set of devices call powerline adapters which carry the signal over your electrical wiring.

Thanks @jamesn123
you've been so helpful. I will purchase a powerline adaptor as you said.
would there be a specific one for Xbox? Are they easy to set up?

No they are generic for any device. Dead easy to setup, you plug one in by your router and connect it via ethernet and then the other by the Xbox and connect those via ethernet, then press the pair button on each adapter and away you go.
These ones are a good starting point
