Moving Country need to cancel broadband contract early

Hello,

I will be moving from Ireland at the end of the month and I have tried calling sky to cancel my contract early, but the sky expert on the phone said that I cannot cancel because I am in middle of my contract and advised that I transfer my contract to someone else???? (which is a very strange recommendation)

This cannot be right, there has to be a way to cancel a contract early??

Could a member of the sky team please contact me in relation to this query?

Thanks

@JFtipp

Typically you will have been paying a monthly subscription at a discounted rate which was linked to a minimum contract term: if you stop paying for whatever reason, including moving out of a serviced area, Sky are entitled to receive a lump sum representing recovery of their initial costs, the reduction of income received already and the loss of future income for the rest of the agreed minimum term.

@JFtipp  The forum messaging is unable to deal with cancellations or downgrades, if you're moving and service is not required you should be able to cancel, however if you agreed to a minimum term there may also be early termination fees.

Sadly you can only cancel either over the phone or online How to cancel your Sky TV subscription | Sky Help | Sky.com

@JFtipp

When you joined Sky you agreed to a minimum term contract with them. If you are now moving and cant take Sky with you for whatever reason then you are liable for early termination charges.

You can take them to court. That's what I'm going to do because when I signed up, I asked if I would pay early termination fees if I moved abroad, that I planned to move abroad, but wasn't sure when. I was told I wouldn't have to pay termination fees. Turns out now they're saying I have to.

@JFtipp Before you act on the advice provided in the last post I'd suggest having a very careful read of the terms and conditions of your contact.

As I pointed out above, ISPs incur fixed up-front costs to provision an address with broadband, mostly paid to Openreach.  They can't reasonably be expected to make a loss from this just because a subscriber then chooses to depart from the service before the margin on their monthly payments has covered the initial expenditure and made the ISP some profit: they aren't charities.

Whether you were incorrectly advised at the time is a different issue, and would involve reviewing the appropriate call recordings or chat logs.
