Massive speed Fluctuations

I've been a sky broadband customer for a number of years and been at my current property for over 3 years. In that time there has been no significant wifi issues. The router has been located in the same place and there has been no material changes to the type or number of devices attached to the wifi.

However over the last week, the wifi speeds have constantly fluctuating, one minute the speeds can be up to 300mbs and the next down to 1mbs or even dropping out completely. I have tested speeds whilst my laptop has a wired connection to the router and the speed remains constant.

A sky engineer has been to visit the property yesterday and replaced cables, router and installed a booster however the same problems now remain. I've al

I work from home so it can cause problems during the day as well as the evenings and becoming a source of frustration.

Has anyone experienced similar problems? If so how to did youi get past them.

Thanks for in advance

@Matt84. I can think of 2 possible causes the first is simply a dodgy hub which I think Sky would swap out if you report the lack of improvement following the engineer's visit.

However if thie symptoms continued with a new hub then some form of interference could cause the problem. Sources could include your neighbours' networks but more likely iss a piece of your own equipment. In the past dodgy microwaves, fluorescent lights and wireless equipment like speakers could be the source. That list is not exhaustive though. Think about anything that might have changed and try to link the times you get the issue to anything switching on or off.

Re: Massive speed Fluctuations

Thank you @Chrisee  for your reply.

When the sky engineer visited yesterday, the router and cables was changed and even before devices attached to the network the speeds where flucuating again.

I cannot think of any changes in the last week to any equipment and many of the wireless devices e.g. speakers are not connected to the new network. I could go around switching off items and seeing if that makes a difference .

I have also moved the router around to other rooms and the problem continued.

The only remaining Sky equipment is the Sky Q box. Could this potentially be causing an issue do you think?

@Matt84. sounds like the engineer did a solid job. It could be something like wireless speakers as thry use the same wireless bands as WiFi use so do things like some heating controls, baby monitors etc but they dont have to show up on a WiFi analyzer app Sky enigineers use you need a proper spectrum analyser instead.

It could be a dodgy Q box but hopefullybthe engineer checked that. Powering down kit then turning it back on one by one isone technique to find the cause. It could be outside your home but unless you neighbour has installed something pretty powerful that is unlikely. @TimmyBGood any idea?

Re: Massive speed Fluctuations

@Matt84. If it is a wireless wi-fi signal issue, install one of the free wi-fi analyser app's on either your mobile or even better your laptop if it has a wireless connection nic, and it will spot the wi-fi signal if it is up/down and collapsing, may not be the hub that is the issue so be aware of any device Q is one, Extenders are others, etc.
