Over the past 4 weeks I have been unable to connect to the router via Wi-Fi when I try to log into a VPN that I need for my work as it just won't connect at all. I had no issues previously I always used Wi-Fi but now not only do I have to plug in an Ethernet cable but I also have to reset the router a couple of times a day and restart my laptop so that I can get in. I can use Wi-Fi on my phone and iPad and the laptop can connect to Wi-Fi but doesn't like it and is really slow and of course can't do any work. Today has been particularly bad though as my daughter who is home for Christmas has also connected via Ethernet and is having the same problems, but it just didn't want to today it took lots of turning on and off for both of us. Hope someone can help or do I just need a new router it is a few years old.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more@Spenner VPNs can be really fussy about the laptop responding to regular keep-alive packets which cause the connection to drop if the sever doesn't get a response. Taken with your description of issues sounds like either a really poor wifi signal or one that is suffering with really bad interference. Most common cause is a neighbour's network on the same or adjacent wifi channel. Rebooting your hub may help as that forces the hub to find the best WiFi channel. There can be other causes but in any case give your hub's signal the best chance by having the unit on a table or shelf as high as you can get it.
The real longterm solution if you have dodgy wifi is buying a better wifi solution but even with that I would use ethernet for work everytime.
