Internet issues since thunderstorm last week

I'm having serious broadband performance issues and I'm hoping someone can help interpret the stats.

My setup is very simple. The Sky Hub SR203 is connected directly to the master socket, and the only devices connected are one mobile phone and two laptops with very light usage.

The router reports the following VDSL sync speeds:

  • Downstream: 44,516 kbps
  • Upstream: 535 kbps

The connection itself appears stable and isn't dropping out, but actual performance is extremely poor. Upload speeds are typically between 0.05 Mbps and 0.17 Mbps, download speeds are far below the reported sync rate, and latency is often several hundred milliseconds with occasional packet loss.

I've also run traceroutes and ping tests which show very high latency beyond the router.

The upstream sync rate of 535 kbps seems unusually low compared to the downstream sync speed, so I'm wondering whether this points to a line fault, DLM intervention, or something else.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Give this test a try:

If it finds no issues have you rebooted the broadband hub since this issue started ?

Re: Internet issues since thunderstorm last week

Thanks for the response, I've reset the router, tried another router and had no joy unfortunately. Disconnect and turned off my MESH network, connected directly to the sky hub, and all devices are disconnected other than a couple of laptops which aren't doing anything strenuous and my mobile which is doing nothing.

Have you ran the Sky diagnostic?

Re: Internet issues since thunderstorm last week

Thanks, Ive ran the diagnostics a few times, managed to get through on the online chat and they are going to monitor the network for the next 72 hours and give me updates via text.

Definitely an issue somewhere: on FTTC with 44Mbs of inbound, the outbound should be more like 10Mbs

As yours is only 0.5Mbs it's quite likely to be saturated, which is then a problem for normal TCP/IP functionality.
