I cannot use catch up or anything that needs broadband, I have tried to reset but it does not help.

quite often my screen goes blank followed by a My Contents Screen that I can only remove by swithcing the television off. n trying to restart my television I get a message "Check signal Cable"

That sounds like an issue with the TV/Cable/Box to me. What Sky box are you using?
