Gigafast speed

So ive just upgraded to Gigafast and seem to only be getting 660Mb/s at the router it is connect to the ONT via a 10m Cat7 ethernet cable. Am i correct in thinking i should be getting much higher speeds (900Mb/s) Many thanks in advance for any advice.

@Jasper2344 To the hub yes, and out off the Ethernet port if you device is capable off the speeds also, depending on your hub wireless WiFi and the model off the hub possible to get close to that also!

@Jasper2344 if you have the black Sky hub around 650Mb/s is the fastest the WiFi5 hub can deliver over WiFi over Ethernet you should see 900Mb/s. The newer white hub is a WiFi6 devices and can deliverthe full 900Mb/s. Sky do not give you a choice if hub unless you buy the WiFi Max add-on.

In practice there is minimal gain going from 660 to 900Mb/s as very few activities can use much more than 100Mb/s and even downloads dont speed up by much as many server owners limit bandwidth they allow for each connection.

Another f actor can be while you can access the full 900Mb/s at quiter times you can find speeds can drop at peak times as you share a 2.48Gb/s connection from the exchange with up to 30 other Openreach customers.

Re: Gigafast speed

To be fair the fastest speeds are always from the port, rather than the WiFI.

But my past history of Sky Broadband are not great, we had much slower speeds than we had with other providers.

And im not keen on their new adverts claiming to be the fastest of any provider. I'm with BRSK and get 2gig, so do Sky sell anything up to 2gig, otherwise their claims are false.

Re: Gigafast speed

@Zoltron They have a 5Gb/s package if anyone is silly enough to want it, but it is tied to a CF connection only!

Re: Gigafast speed

I think any provider if you have a fibre connection can get you a custom speed.

I've just had a bad experience with Sky not delivering a service which they claim to deliver to the point where I was released from my contract.

I have seen many posts on the forum where speed has been poor and the service commitment has not been met direct from the router via Ethernet.

As I said I have a synchronous 2gig connection with BRSK and in 12 months I've never had a problem, I've not had in contract price rises for £40 a month. Speed has been absolutely bulletproof.

@Zoltron That is all you can ask and hope for!

Re: Gigafast speed

So realisticly the black hub is the wrong router for the 900Mb/s connection then? According to Skys checker on the app i am only getting 667Mb/s at the hub. So is the hub resticting the speed as that is all its capable of handling?

Re: Gigafast speed

@Jasper2344 Would be nothing to do with the SR203 hub, it has a 1Gb/s wan port so it should sync at that speed. You may have to go look on the sky system status off the hub to see what it has for the modem settings! 192.168.0.1 to web manager to it!

Re: Gigafast speed

@Jasper2344 Maybe you just unlucky and have several neigbours also on Gigafast package on the shared 2.5Gb fibre so only getting the min 600Mbs Sky guranteed.

Just thinking if 20 people signed up for Gigafast and shared that connection. But Sky is quite generous with min speed compared with Plusnett and Voda...those 2 offer about 50% guranteed speed.

I think Sky 500Mbs is the sweetspot with 400Mbs min guranteed. I was checking the option to upgrade to 900Mbs and they want extra £19 per month 😁
