Getting WiFi Sorted
The first couple of days the system appeared to work well. I was getting acceptable TV performance via WiFi in both my Dining room at the rear of the bungalow and also in the bedroom at the front of the bungalow.
However after a week I was having repeated issues with both the Dining room and the front Bedroom both dropping out frequently. Also Amazon "Alexa" units were struggling to retain connection.
I downloaded a WiFi monitoring app on my phone and observed that the signal from the main hub was often lower in amplitude on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, stronger signals were arriving from other neighbourhood installations.
Wifi was not continuous and was very variable in strength and was a lot of the time less powerful than neighbours signals
Using a borrowed pair of Passthrough Powerline Network Extenders (TP-Link AV1300) I was bale to sort out either the front bedroom or the rear dining room, I only had two units at that time.
I reported the issues to Sky and was supplied with a Sky Pod WiFi extender (hexagonal type).
At first I completely failed to get a consistent stable connection to the Pod. Even at close range (about 12" !) connectivity could not be maintained.
I was also consulting the My Sky App and that was reporting an issue with my main TV even though I was not experiencing any such issue. The latter is a 4k set and was running on a hard wired ethernet connection.
It failed, however, to report any connection with the Pod.
I eventually gave up, but left the Pod connected. After around 3 hours of running, it suddenly became connected, appeared on the My Sky App too.
I repositioned it to provide a more beneficial location and indeed was able to solve the problems at one end of the house.
I have also re-evaluated the performance as shown on my Phone's WiFi App, this is now showing much stronger and more stable signals than previously. The system also changes the channels occasionally assumably to avoid collisions.
I have already acquired further Powerline Network Extenders as these undoubtedly solved connections issues for me.
I now have reliable TV performance at front and rear of the house as well as the short range WiFi connected puck in the middle of the house and of course the hard wired ethernet connection in the sitting room is also no issue.
The WiFi extender Pod is providing good responses for the Alexa at the front of the house and WiFi for the Phones is also now well served at the front of the house.
I have had several conversations with several of your guides. I was due a call back from one of them yesterday which I never received. I understand that you will provide up to 3 range extending Pods, but that final one or two have to be approved by an investigating engineer. The messages on the My Sky App suggested that a Openreach issue existed, I assume as I have been told that there are no outstanding issues on my network that the issue has been resolved. May be the problem that was there caused the problems with the WiFi, although TV seemed unaffected.
We live in a 1950 bungalow with several cinderblock internal walls which are notorious for being less than beneficial for RF. The position for the Pod that I have currently is in the loft so it can beam down into the rooms beneath through a plasterboard ceiling, also communicate with the main hub in a similar fashion.
I feel that one further Pod would provide an acceptable solution for WiFi for the phones and Alexa units.
What I would say is that the signals from the main hub also took a beneficial leap in performance once the Pod established connection, although that took an inordinate amount of time.
If I have to keep squealing until I get an engineer visit so be it but I feel that the simple provision of a second unit would prove beneficial.
Although I am retired I used to work in electronics as a design engineer working with narrow band RF systems for the care industry, so I do speak with some knowledge.
Sorry this is so long, particularly as it is my first post, but the story is odd.
When I first moved to this property I was with BT, experienced no WiFi issues at all. WHen they "upgraded" me to EE I ended up needing range extenders which were not always reliable. I decided to try Sky, love the picture quality but WiFi has been more of an issue.
