Full fibre installation - where does it go?!

I had the gullible upgrade offer in my account, and signed up as I'm aware that existing copper wiring is due to be redundant by the end of next year

im now a little confused by the process. We have overheard power to our house and a front door actually on the side of the house, in the middle. With that in mind, where will open each need to fit the ONS box? As close to the pylon as possible or somewhere else?

inside the house, the router and telephone point are in the middle in the hall downstairs. There's no plug socket closer to the front door. Does fibre connection still need to be next to a phone line or just near a plug socket? And is the strength better so it doesn't need to be in the middle of the house?

as it stands it feels like we'll end up with a

load of cabling outside and then a load of cabling inside to get to where the router currently is and I'm trying to avoid it.

When you say overhead power & pylon I'm presuming you mean overhead telephone lines coming from a telegraph pole?

Each case is different but yes, it can come from the same pole or underground and will be a new cable. You can ask them to remove the old cable if needed.

The external box if using the pole is usually near to the existing line but they can be flexible within reason. The internal ONT needs power from a socket so keep that in mind. The router connects via an ethernet cable so you can locate the router in the same position. The phone plugs into the router, both require an electrical point as previously.

The WiFi strength isn't going to change.

That's generally not the case.

The analogue voice call service (PSTN) is due to be switched off nationally at the end of January 2027, but in the absence of FTTP, copper circuits will be switched to digital voice calls.

The mandatory replacement of copper by fibre has a much longer timescale.

Is it a new box it plugs into inside the house that can be located anywhere inside the house as long as there's a power source for it and the router?

@chippers1234  Full fibre carries the telephone service within that and is accessed by a telephone port on the hub.

As for where the cable will come  in, if you use this link https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome  it will confirm if it's pole or underground, if it's a pole it's normalluy the same pole as the existing analogue cable.

Where it comes in will depend in the easiest route normally which for most people is through a wall.

If your living room is for example at the front of the property and the pole is outside the front of the property the fibre cable will likely come through the wall of the living room preferably near a power socket.

No, the existing BT(?) telephone socket will be surplus to requirement, the engineer won't remove it although you could always ask nicely.

It's a new box called an ONT that is fitted inside the house (usually opposite the external box) that needs it's own power socket, it connects to the router via a standard ethernet cable so the router can be located elsewhere near a different power socket. You'll get some leeway so again, just talk to them.

immtrying to avoid trails of cables from the outside box to inside as our plug sockets are nt anywhere near the entrance to the house or where the external box may go

Trying to find two spare sockets might be a pain too - it's fine where we have it at the moment as they aren't ever used for anything else but can't be used for it now

@chippers1234 nothing stopping you using a mains extention block for yghe ONT and hub if you want.
