Full Fibre Installation

My contract had ended so I called Sky and was told I had no option but to upgrade to Full Fibre and was told a box will be fitted outside my house, no disruption to my service and I wouldn't even need to be home. Today I have received a received what looks like a new router. Instructions look like I need another box inside my home too ONT? Reading on here, it sounds like this is a much bigger job than just sticking a small box outside. I asked repeatedly what the process for installation is as the line socket is upstairs in an awkward place and the router about 4 meters away.  The agent couldn't answer and just kept saying i had to have this and nobody needed to do anything inside the house. Looks like i will be refusing this install. My current broadband is great but now worried what will happen if I'm unable to get the full fibre?

You wouldn't need to be in for the external box but as external and internal work (ont) tend to be done on the same day you would need to be available on the day.

You or someone will need to be at home to have the optical network terminal box  fitted it  will  probably  look like this

Thanks for confirming. The sales agent should have at least been able to tell me that much instead of insisting nobody needs to work indoors. I specifically said I dont want holes drilled in my wall or any internal work and was promised this is not the case. Ill be working from home and can't afford the disruption to the connection. I just want to know how long I'll be able to stay with my current set up

If you  have broadband  already  you will still be able to work while  the installation  is being  done, and hopefully  you  will  have  the same  experience  as i  did when i  changed  over to full fibre, once the installation  was finished  and the hub was plugged  into the optical network terminal box  the engineer  checked  that everything  was working  OK  before  he left, also I was able to discuss  with  the engineer  where I  wanted the optical network terminal box  in the house,, my change over was very smooth, the whole job because  of the way the fibre optic cable runs  took about 2 hours. Running the cable from the telegraph pole to my house around  the top under the guttering down the wall to the grey box outside then from there around the  house to the hole into the back  of the optical network terminal box, the o.n.t does need to be near a plug socket, and also note that any land line phone will  have to be plugged  into  the back of  the  hub to work, as once work is done and up and running the old telephone socket  will no longer work, I  had been  on sky full fibre  broadband gigafast 900mps  since January  last year, and while other people  in my area  yesterday  after the storms of Friday night  had no Internet, I  was still working  no problems

No-one knows: the current national FTTP rollout (running up until the end of 2026 and intended to bring ultrafast broadband within reach of 85% of UK properties) has no element of compulsion for individual households to actually take it up at this time.

Presumably the ultimate aim is to remove the legacy copper network though, as maintaining this is already a colossal headache and only becomes more expensive for each remaining user as their overall numbers fall, infrastructure decays and fewer Openreach personnel have any experience with it.

It's also worth noting that once television moves entirely online, copper broadband may simply be inadequate to support the bandwidth required.

@Lola1705 Too add to @TimmyBGood wonderfull desc. you cannot teach an old dog new tricks, and the new up and coming puppies are just not intrested in all the old, if it's not on the phone or google, then it's not worth looking at, head scratcher's....

when the external box is fitted it may be some way away from where the router is currently or a new one should be placed. Do openreach run cable from the external box round the oputside of the house to where the ONT should go (i.e. adjacent to the router in the house) or do they expect sky to do that. In other words who owns the connection up to the ONT, and can I as the cusotmer determine where the ONT has to go to suit my needs not where the old copper connection came in to the house? Really appreacite getting this point clarififed before I commit to ordering as I think there is a bit of a cable run requried on my property for it!

@SootyBlue Always going to be an issue, are you for sure it's an OR Openreach install? Some take the tact shortest is best and i had the Installer from M J Quinn, we will bring the cable off the pole and to the back off the house, run it all from the back to the Front living room that would be a good place to have your new box fitted, your having a laugh, no serious so cancelled with that clown, cable followed same route as copper, OR came and did, i took care off getting an Ethernet connection from the ONT to the Hub position internal! 

OR where more than happy, accommodating and did there part in under 30 minutes as all was prepped for them, it's all going to be what the Installation Engineer needs to do and in the time they have to get it done in!

The Fibre to the ONT and the ONT itself is all Openreach or CityFibre, after that it's all yours to do as you need! Only requirement is power for the ONT, and not to be having Fibre all over the inside off the home, as THAT is just not easy to do....

Almost certain it would be OR, ducting and street manhole cover panel outside house is all old BT stuff.

really want avoid cable outside the house, lots of corners etc. to deal with. Ideal is for OR to lcoate the exterbnal box other side of the front of the house (all near road where the ducitng is) and then ONT is other side of that wall next to where router is currently. Run if 'new' path would be 50 feet or so through my front garden and side path.

@SootyBlue Are you underground fed currently with the copper, the BTW site will say what how OR see your home connection, linked below just put your address details in, lines under the table say what and how! I have the same, but it all ends up a Pole back off the home area where OR stuck a CBT at the top! If your ducting is all clear and to the front off the home, that is where it will be, the fact the hub is somewhere else just does not cut the mustard so to say!
