Fibre Updated caller at Door
A young Man knocked on my door this morning. He had an iPad and ID around his neck and parked on the road a car which had Sky and words on it and was multi-coloured. He said I had to have a Free upgrade to Full Fibre and it wouldnt be done today but he would tell me when. He asked who was the Account holder and I gave him my name. He then asked my date of birth which I didnt want to give, smelling a Rat, and asked him what other info he needed. He said there would be security questions such as Mothers maiden name. I said I'm not doing this. He said it was all mandatory and that the Government was imposing this. He said if I didnt make an appointment now I would have to ring Sky and it would take about 45 minutes to get through. I asked to see his ID and he flashed it at me and I could not see it. He did not tell me his name. I photographed the car when he was getting in it and I took the reg [removed]. He came across very dodgy indeed. I told him I had not received a letter nor email regarding this.
Can anyone advise on this. If its a scam then I will call the Police. If its real why are Sky driving up to your house and knocking on your door without making an appointment.

Presumably a rather clumsy reference to either the cessation of PSTN voice calls at the end of January 2027 or the rather longer term project to replace legacy copper 'phone' circuits with optical fibre.
Neither is actually a 'government' scheme (the national network having been privatised since the 1980s) but they have both been explicitly permitted by Ofcom, which is the government-appointed regulator.

Re: Fibre Updated caller at Door
It has actually come from the governemnt in regards to withdrawing copper and replacing with fibre i.e switching off the PSTN network and replacing traditional phone excahnges. https://www.local.gov.uk/parliament/briefings-and-responses/westminster-hall-debate-withdrawal-coppe.... We are unfortunately quite far behind other countries and its long overdue, ive lonly just ahd full fibre installed and before that I had only 4 mmps ! not even FTTC

Re: Fibre Updated caller at Door
Nope: it's a private industry. Note the first line on that web page.
However it's also a no-brainer: copper phone pair distribution is a Victorian technology.

Yes you are right it's a private industry, however that doesn't mean it's not regulated and that the government haven't put changes in place through as well as involving Ofcom. Yes it is Victorian technology another reason it's inefficient and outdated.

Re: Fibre Updated caller at Door
I have had the same, made an appointment with me and raised a CR form with SKy via his ipad as my phone line not showing it could be upgraded. He came back yesterday and tried again, but the line still hadn't been fixed, so he has made another appointment for 2 days time. This time he rang SKY again, and raised an urgent CR number. He seemed genuine, and claimed he had just been around the corner to upgrade someone else. The reason I think it is genuine is because I did get a text message a few months back, saying I was eligible for a free SKY upgrade to full fibre. There was an issue with the line then, and it could not be done, so assumed when he called unannounced and was doing several in the village, it was true.
