Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
Just come home to find OR must have been out and fitted the grey box to my wall. Trouble is it's at the back of the house on my kitchen wall. If the engineer on Friday needs to drill through the wall in that place, it will go into a cupboard! There's on electrical socket above the bench (and cupboard) that could be used. But does this mean my router will need to be in the kitchen? Hope not as signal is rubbish there plus it would be near my cooker.
My living room (where current hub is based) is actually upstairs. Does the router need to be plugged into the Sky box as no chance of that happening if everything is downstairs.
Now very worried!

Re: Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
Generally yes, they will go through the wall near the grey box on the oiutside wall. This is because that is probably where the duct is closest to your house. Did your existing line go into the house there originally?
They can, within reason, put the ONT & Router anywhere you want, but they won't want to use a ladder unless they have been advised that the install is on a first floor. If eher you want the hub is directly above then no problem, unless they can't climb.
They could run the fiber from the grey box around the outside of the house to where you want it, they have lengths of fiber in 10m increments up to about 60m.
The ONT (where the fibre terminates) plugs into your router (hub) with the supplied ethernet cable. Your Sky boxes connect over wifi but can be hard wired.
I had mine done today, at was not a straight forward install as I wanted the fiber terminating in my garage where my server lives, a cup of tea and me doing the internal fibre run got the job completed in a couple of hours, including the underground runs.
Hope that helps.

Re: Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
All Sky related stuff came through a hole in the wall at the front of the house. The room directly above the kitchen is the bathroom so no good there, but the bedroom is next to that which has more sockets and better WiFi signal so would be better than the kitchen. If they could trail it to the front of the house and in that way, they'd have to go over the roof so not sure if they'd do that!
Just don't really want that kind of stuff in my very small kitchen (and I mean very sma).

Re: Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
They won't trial it unfortunatly, probably won't go over the roof either, that was a Sky Dish installers short cut and it looks rubbish!
Talk it through with the installation engineer, they may have some suggestions.

Re: Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
When I had my full fibre broadband installed in January last year I had a talk with the engineer and because the fibre optic cable came from behind my house to the back of my house the run the cable under the guttering half around the house down the wall to the grey box on the side of house and the run the cable from the grey box around to the front of the house to the living room and into the house where I wanted the optical network terminal box to be like this

Re: Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
That would be ideal but as I live on a terraced street, the only way around the front is over the roof which someone else has said doubtful they'd do that. I'd thought everything was getting done on the same day, wasn't aware OR were coming out today. If I'd been here I'd have asked all sorts of questions!

Re: Fibre Installation - Outside Grey Box
If they can't run it the way you want they may have to re-do the outside install from the other side of your house, it thats possible.
Problrm will be where the available ducts are.
