Fibre 500 new install

 Hi folks ,

I upgraded to full fibre 500 from super fast yesterday , on the sky app it says speed to the hub 469mb/s , is that normal or should it say 500mb/s as it's full fibre .

@Tom+Shinkwin

The 'guaranteed minimum' on a 500Mbs FTTP circuit is 400Mbs

@Tom+Shinkwin full fibre servicesshould deliver the speed bought or close to but at peak timesspeeds can drop down a bit. However in practice you shouldn't notice any slowdoown during normal use.

The system Openreach uses shares a single downstream link with a capacity of 2.48Gb/s between up to 30 lines connected to a single distribution point. Clearly if every connection is sold and every body ran a speed test at once and they all have bought 500Mb/s capacity speedscwould be fsr lower but staistically that is very unlikely.

Re: Fibre 500 new install

Thanks for the replies , so i shouldnt be getting the 500mbps from my ont to the hub , it changes everday , i presume it syncs at a certain time every day, for example on the 8th on the my sky app for the last 30 days it was 502 on the 8/11, 430 on the 9/11, 419 on the 10/11 and 412 today , seems to be decreasing daily, i was under the impression with full fibre the ont would stay at 500 mbps on the sky app.

Hope this makes sense.

@Tom+Shinkwin you are not buying a dedicated 500Mb/s fibre connection you are sharing a connection with up,to 30 other connections loccaly to you as you share a distribution point with a 2.48Gb/s downstream fibre from the exchange.

In practice you should get close to the full 500Mb/s or a little bit above (the gross speed is around 550Mb/s but roughly 8% of that is lost to network overheads) most of the time as distribution points are not normally fully sold and most customers including yourself only use a small % of the most of  bandwidth they use.However at peak times speeds will drop due to contention but unless your neighbours are either video editors or some other heavy user the drops are minimal. This only noticeable when running speed tests so are not worth stressing over.

Thisxset up allows Openreach to sell an affordable fibre connection as a dedicated 500Mb/s line would costs around 10 times more. Want to know more look up how GPON connections work.

@Tom+Shinkwin contention on a shared connection simple.as that the speed will vary by time of day.

For example here are my own results

Sky's tests

Speedtest run in the last 5 minutes

On my connection Sky's speeds are very conservative as speed tests are usually 500Mb/s or there abouts.
